WWE commentator Michael Cole recounts near‑fatal mountain fall and career struggle
Michael Cole told Stephanie McMahon on the "What's Your Story?" podcast that he narrowly avoided a 2,000‑foot drop while descending Grand Teton. After rappelling 85 feet, he slipped while trying to unclip his rope, tumbling about 55‑60 feet before stopping just inches from a fatal plunge. He thought his ankle was broken but his helmet prevented a concussion.
Cole also discussed the pressure of being labeled Jim Ross’s replacement in WWE. He said for years he heard that phrase repeatedly, describing a decade‑long effort to find his own voice and style, eventually gaining confidence with support from Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn.
In another segment he noted that only a small fraction of wrestling stars—such as The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin and John Cena—have ever succeeded without the help of the announce team, emphasizing the desk’s role in shaping fan perception of talent.
