Michael Healy-Rae assaulted in Dublin; man charged

Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae was assaulted in Dublin on Wednesday, September 16, while his vehicle was stopped in traffic on Cork Street. The attack occurred shortly after 4:00 PM as the Kerry politician was traveling from Leinster House.

CCTV footage reportedly shows a man approaching the vehicle through an open window, shouting obscenities, and punching the TD in the face. Healy-Rae required seven stitches for a laceration to his lip and was treated at St Vincent’s University Hospital before being discharged.

Anthony Foley, 51, has been charged with assault causing harm. During his court appearance, Foley denied the allegations. The court heard that the assault may have been politically motivated, targeting Healy-Rae due to his position as an elected representative. Foley was denied bail and remanded in custody.

Following the incident, Healy-Rae expressed that he would not be deterred from his political work but called for a serious conversation regarding the “growing toxicity” and violence directed toward public representatives in a democratic society.
