Michael J. Fox honored with Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at Emmys

Michael J. Fox received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the 78th Emmy Awards, earning a standing ovation for his decades of advocacy and philanthropic work regarding Parkinson’s disease. The actor, who was diagnosed with the condition in 1991 at age 29, appeared on stage in a wheelchair and was joined by presenter Julianna Margulies.

In an emotional acceptance speech, Fox reflected on his decision to initially keep his diagnosis secret due to fears that it would impact his career and public perception. He stated, “Accepting Parkinson’s didn't mean I had to surrender to it. It just meant I had to do everything I could for those living with this disease.” He also expressed optimism regarding medical progress, noting that researchers are “close” to finding a cure.

Fox’s Michael J. Fox Foundation has become a leading non-profit funder of Parkinson’s research, having invested over $3 billion into scientific studies. The actor also shared personal reflections on the challenges of managing the disease, including difficulties with memorizing dialogue, while expressing gratitude to his wife, Tracy Pollan, and their four children for their support.
