Michael J. Fox says acting extends his life as he opens up about Parkinson’s impact

Michael J. Fox, 65, explained that returning to acting has “really prolonged my life,” after retiring in 2020 because of Parkinson’s‑related speech issues. He recently appeared in the third season of Apple’s comedy‑drama Shrinking and expressed enthusiasm for a potential fourth season, noting his love for co‑creator Bill Lawrence and the cast.

In a candid interview, Fox described how his public battle with Parkinson’s disease has affected his wife, actress Tracy Pollan, saying she “lived a hell because of my Parkinson’s.” He recounted his diagnosis at age 29, his decision in 1998 to disclose the condition publicly, and the importance he places on normalising the disease. Fox also highlighted the work of The Michael J. Fox Foundation, which he founded in 2000 to fund Parkinson’s research.
