Michael Jackson Biopic Nears $1 Billion Box‑Office, Set to Top All‑Time Biopic Record
The Lionsgate‑released Michael Jackson biopic, titled “Michael,” is rapidly approaching a $1 billion global box‑office milestone. Tracking data through late June shows the film has earned roughly $960 million worldwide, surpassing Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and two Lord of the Rings titles, and becoming the highest‑grossing biopic of any genre. In North America the movie has generated about $369 million, while international markets—including a $5.4 million boost from Japan—have contributed the balance.
The strong performance has also broken several studio records, making “Michael” Lionsgate’s top‑grossing release and the most successful musical biopic ever. Despite a 44 % drop in its second weekend, the film remains one of the year’s top earners. Production plans for a sequel are already underway, with producer Graham King slated to direct after Antoine Fuqua departs for a separate Netflix project.
