Michael Johnston reflects on playing a gay character in Teen Wolf

Actor Michael Johnston has reflected on the personal challenges he faced while portraying Corey Bryant, a gay character on the MTV series ‘Teen Wolf’. Johnston shared that the period of filming coincided with his own journey toward self-acceptance, a process he described as “terrifying” due to growing up in the South and being in “complete and utter denial.”

During the production, Johnston initially reassured his family that his character’s sexuality was strictly fictional. He noted that while the experience was frightening at the time, he has since found it rewarding to receive messages from LGBTQ+ viewers who felt empowered by the character’s visibility and normalcy on screen.

Johnston, who recently appeared in the film ‘Obsession’ in a straight role, expressed an interest in continuing to take on intentional queer roles in the future.
