A Ugandan court has ordered the extradition of retired Lieutenant Michael Katungi Mpeirwe to the United States. The Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court ruled that the government satisfied the legal requirements under Uganda’s Extradition Act.

Mpeirwe, a former close associate of Ugandan army chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba, faces three federal charges in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. These include conspiracy to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine, conspiracy to possess firearms and destructive devices in furtherance of drug trafficking, and conspiracy to provide material support to the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), which the U.S. designates as a foreign terrorist organization.

U.S. prosecutors allege that Mpeirwe and his co-conspirators, including Bulgarian, Kenyan, and Tanzanian nationals, attempted to supply military-grade weaponry worth approximately 53.7 million euros to Mexican drug cartels. The intended arsenal reportedly included machine guns, rocket launchers, grenades, sniper rifles, anti-aircraft guns, and unmanned aerial systems. Mpeirwe has been committed to Luzira Prison pending the final decision by the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs regarding his surrender to U.S. authorities.
