Michael Kayode receives first senior Italy call-up

Brentford defender Michael Kayode has received his first senior call-up to the Italy national football team. The 22-year-old right-back, who previously played for Fiorentina, is expected to potentially debut in upcoming matches against Belgium, France, or Turkey.

Kayode addressed recent speculation regarding his international allegiance, confirming that the Nigeria Football Federation approached him to represent the Super Eagles. However, he stated that choosing Italy was an “easy decision” due to his long history within the Italian youth systems, including his role in winning the 2023 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.

Reflecting on his career, Kayode discussed his transition from Juventus's youth academy to playing in lower divisions with Gozzano, noting that those experiences provided the foundation for his current success in the Premier League. He also highlighted his development in England, specifically working with specialized coaches to improve his long throw-in capabilities.
