Michael King elects free agency after opting out of Padres contract

San Diego Padres right-handed pitcher Michael King has declined his player option, opting to become a free agent for the second consecutive season. By exercising his opt-out, King rejects the remaining two years of his contract, which were valued at approximately $58 million.

King enters the market following a strong season in which he recorded 12 wins and a 3.21 ERA across 32 starts. He also delivered a notable postseason performance, posting a 0.64 ERA in three appearances. His decision leaves the Padres facing significant uncertainty regarding their pitching rotation, as the team must now address potential departures and rebuild their staff.

King, 31, was originally acquired by San Diego in the trade that sent Juan Soto to the New York Yankees. He is expected to be one of the most coveted arms in the upcoming free-agent market.
