Michael Kiwanuka releases self-produced album Fudge
British singer-songwriter Michael Kiwanuka has released his new album, Fudge, a 12-song project released via Polydor Records. The album marks a significant creative shift, as Kiwanuka takes on production duties himself for the first time since his 2012 debut, moving away from the collaborative production teams he has utilized for the past 13 years.
Sonically, the record is described as a soulful, psychedelic, and instinctive work characterized by a more minimal and free-flowing structure. The album was recorded in tandem with his 2024 LP, Small Changes, and was inspired by the words of the late jazz musician Chick Corea regarding the importance of creating art that one finds beautiful.
The release follows a period of significant personal hardship for the artist. Kiwanuka recently revealed that he suffered a stroke caused by a brain bleed resulting from high blood pressure, which required intensive surgery and time in the ICU. While the album serves as a testament to his songwriting, Kiwanuka has noted that his health issues will likely hinder his ability to make music for the foreseeable future.
