Michael Kiwanuka reveals stroke recovery and announces new album
British singer-songwriter Michael Kiwanuka has revealed that he suffered a severe stroke earlier this year due to a brain bleed caused by high blood pressure. The 39-year-old Mercury Prize winner shared the news via social media, describing the experience as one of the “toughest challenges” he has faced and noting that he faces a “long, tough journey” ahead with significant rehabilitation required.
The health crisis explains his recent absence from scheduled performances in the United States. While Kiwanuka expressed uncertainty regarding when or how he will return to touring, he thanked the NHS medical staff for their care and noted he is “fighting to get better.”
Alongside the health update, Kiwanuka announced his upcoming fifth studio album, titled ‘Fudge’, which is scheduled for release on October 23 via Polydor. The album is his first self-produced effort since 2012 and was written almost concurrently with his 2024 release, ‘Small Changes’.
