Michael Kretschmer proposes ‘new Auto Union’ to protect Saxony automotive industry

During a CDU parliamentary group forum in Leipzig, Saxony Minister President Michael Kretschmer addressed the economic future of the region. A central theme was the preservation of the automotive industry, with Kretschmer proposing a concept of a ‘new Auto Union’ to advocate for regional industrial cooperation and support from Volkswagen.

Kretschmer emphasized the need for both state and corporate responsibility to maintain the automotive sector amidst challenges such as declining demand and competition from Chinese manufacturers. He suggested that the region should focus on manufacturing vehicles rather than military equipment to ensure long-term value creation.

In addition to industrial policy, other regional developments were noted, including a 60 million euro agreement from the Free State of Saxony to expand the Sportforum Leipzig. This project includes renovating the arena to 12,000 seats and constructing a new ball sports hall to support both professional and amateur athletics.
