Michael Major's $200 Steam Game Generates $1.3 M Gross but Yields $2 K After Refunds

In January, 18‑year‑old American developer Michael Major released the satirical 2D title “This Game Costs $200” on Valve’s Steam platform, pricing it at the platform’s $200 ceiling. The game recorded 6,717 purchases, producing a gross revenue of roughly $1.38 million. However, 6,707 buyers (99.9%) requested refunds under Steam’s policy that allows full refunds within 14 days for games played less than two hours, leaving Major with only about $2,045.

Most of the sales originated from China, and many purchasers refunded without ever opening the game. Major suggested the pattern might involve users exploiting the high price for Steam points or possible money‑laundering schemes, though no evidence was confirmed. Valve declined to comment on the situation.
