Michael Marra elected leader of Scottish Labour
Michael Marra has been elected as the new leader of the Scottish Labour party, securing nearly two-thirds of the vote in a contest against Joe Fagan. Marra, the MSP for North East Scotland, succeeds Anas Sarwar, who resigned in July to serve as a trade minister in Andy Burnham’s government.
The leadership change follows a period of significant electoral decline for the party. In the May Scottish Parliament elections, Scottish Labour achieved its worst result since devolution, winning only 17 seats. Marra stated in his acceptance speech that the party must reconnect with voters and lead with clear values to address Scotland’s challenges.
Marra’s platform includes support for North Sea energy development, specifically drilling in the Rosebank oilfield and Jackdaw gasfield, which he argues supports Scottish jobs and is cleaner than foreign imports. This position drew criticism from the Scottish Greens, who argued that continued fossil fuel development fails to provide a fair transition for workers.
