Michael Matthews confirmed for Coppa Bernocchi following World Championship silver

Australian cyclist Michael Matthews has confirmed his participation in the 107th edition of the Coppa Bernocchi, scheduled for October 5 in Legnano, Italy. Matthews, riding for Team Jayco AlUla, arrives following a significant performance at the World Championships in Montreal, where he secured a silver medal in the elite road race.

In the Montreal race, Matthews finished behind American Brandon McNulty and ahead of Mathieu van der Poel. This silver medal marks the fourth medal of his career in the road race discipline. Matthews described the achievement as feeling like a victory, particularly following a period of severe health and physical challenges, including life-threatening pulmonary blood clots in 2025 and a double wrist fracture earlier this year.

The Coppa Bernocchi is part of the Trittico Regione Lombardia 2026, a series of three prestigious Italian classics including the Coppa Agostoni and the Tre Valli Varesine.
