Michael Murphy criticizes Western strategy toward Serbia

Former US Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Michael Murphy, has criticized the long-standing strategy of the United States and the European Union toward the Western Balkans, calling for a fundamental shift in policy regarding Serbia.

Murphy argues that Washington and Brussels have operated under the flawed assumption that stabilizing Serbia would automatically stabilize the entire region. He notes that while this logic is intellectually sound given Serbia's size and economy, the practical application has failed. He claims that since the fall of Slobodan Milošević, international efforts to 'win over' Serbia have often ignored actions that destabilize Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, and Montenegro.

According to Murphy, the international community relied too heavily on the transformative power of the European Union's 'carrot' approach, which he asserts has not succeeded. He suggests that Western powers have repeatedly convinced themselves that different Serbian leaders would be different, only to face disappointment. He concludes that the West must stop clinging to the illusion that Serbia has changed and instead adopt a policy that treats the country as a challenge to Western interests.
