Michael Page report shows skills becoming more vital than degrees

A global study by recruitment consultancy Michael Page, titled ‘Spotlight on Skills’ as part of the ‘Talent Trends 2026’ report, indicates a shift in the job market toward a ‘skills-first’ approach. Based on a sample of 30,000 candidates worldwide, the research shows that 86% of respondents believe employers and recruiters now place more value on concrete, practical skills than on university degrees.

While academic qualifications remain essential for accessing top opportunities in specific sectors such as legal, HR, finance, and technology, 75% of candidates believe a strong skill set can compensate for the absence of a degree. Pamela Bonavita, managing director at Michael Page, noted that practical skills and academic study are not mutually exclusive but should be seen as complementary. The study highlights that two-thirds of job seekers are willing to apply for roles if they believe they possess the majority of the required skills, even if they do not meet every formal educational requirement.
