Michael Schumacher joins Benetton following contract dispute
The 1991 Formula One season saw a pivotal shift in driver lineups following Michael Schumacher’s impressive debut performances. After showcasing significant speed with Jordan Grand Prix, Schumacher became the subject of a contract dispute between team owners.
A legal loophole involving a letter of intent—where the phrasing was changed from ‘the contract’ to ‘a contract’—allowed Benetton boss Flavio Briatore to secure Schumacher’s services. Despite efforts by Eddie Jordan to block the move through Italian courts, the transition proceeded.
To facilitate Schumacher’s move to Benetton, Roberto Moreno was sidelined. The situation was eventually resolved through mediation in the Monza paddock, involving Bernie Ecclestone, and a financial settlement with Moreno to allow him to move into the seat vacated at Jordan.
