Michael Vick names Deljay Bailey as Norfolk State starting quarterback

Michael Vick has announced that former SEC quarterback Deljay Bailey will be the starting quarterback for Norfolk State in their season opener against Winston-Salem State. The decision follows an open competition during training camp that included Reginald “Reggie” Johnson, who was previously considered a frontrunner for the role.

Bailey, a redshirt junior from Mississippi, previously played for Ole Miss and Grambling State before a productive stint at Itawamba Community College. Vick noted that the competition was based on production and output, emphasizing that no positions were guaranteed.

Reflecting on his transition to coaching, Vick stated that his first season at Norfolk State, which resulted in a 1-11 record, significantly increased his appreciation for Historically Black College and University (HBCU) football. He noted that the level of intensity and the quality of coaches and players in the MEAC are often underestimated by those on the outside. Vick also acknowledged personal areas for growth, noting he intends to focus more on defense and special teams in his second year.
