Carlton appoints Josh Fraser as interim coach after Michael Voss resigns

Michael Voss stepped down as head coach of the AFL's Carlton Football Club following a disappointing season that saw the Blues slip to 16th on the ladder and suffer an eight‑game losing streak. In an interview with the AFL website Voss said, “It’s very frustrating… I’m at peace with the decision, but I don’t know what is next,” adding that the pressure of rebuilding the list and coaching staff had become “too big a task.”

Assistant coach Josh Fraser was named interim senior coach for the remainder of the 2024 season. Fraser told a podcast, “I’m ambitious. I believe I could do it… I’m realistic around this, sometimes you need an opportunity to get in front of a club and do it.” He has seven years of state‑league head‑coaching experience and previously served at Carlton as an assistant during its 2023 premiership campaign. The club said Voss left the club “in a better place than when he started.”

The coaching change adds to a period of instability for Carlton, which has seen several high‑profile player departures and mixed results since Voss’s appointment in 2022. Analysts note the shift away from Voss’s “brute‑force” style reflects broader AFL trends toward speed, skill and structured play. The next permanent senior coach will be selected after the season ends.
