Michal Ženíšek, Pioneer Czech Bookseller, Dies at 73

Former Brno bookseller Michal Ženíšek died at the age of 73. In 1990 he opened one of the first private bookstores in Czechoslovakia on Květinářská Street, later moving to the Alfa passage where he operated the shop until 2023.

Ženíšek was a well‑known figure in Brno’s cultural scene, hosting gatherings of actors, writers and musicians. Prior to 1989 he worked as a stagehand, extra actor and production assistant in various theatres and short‑film projects. Friends and cultural colleagues, including musician Martin Kyšperský, announced his death on social media.
