Michal Kovařčík injured in preseason hockey match

Ice hockey player Michal Kovařčík, formerly of the Finnish SM-liiga, sustained a serious injury during a preseason match between HC Oceláři Třinec and Kometa Brno. The incident occurred approximately 20 seconds into the first period when Kovařčík was hit by a heavy tackle from Jan Ščotka.

Kovařčík remained motionless on the ice and was transported to the hospital via stretcher. While he was conscious and able to communicate with medical staff, he was later diagnosed with a concussion and released from the hospital.

Třinec head coach Boris Žabka made the decision to suspend the match, citing both the severity of the injury and the increasingly aggressive nature of play following the incident. Žabka criticized the officiating, noting that referees lacked sufficient video footage to review the hit in a professional league arena. Kometa Brno coach Libor Zábranský expressed support for the decision to end the game.
