Michalis Bekiris steps down from Prime Minister's Office

Michalis Bekiris, the Director of the Prime Minister's Office at the Hellenic Parliament, has announced his temporary departure from his duties. Bekiris stated that he informed Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of his decision to step aside until the judicial clarification of the ongoing matter.

The decision follows controversies regarding the lack of an official government gazette (FEK) appointment for his long-standing position and questions concerning his academic credentials. Bekiris has characterized the situation as a ‘unprecedented campaign of personal targeting’ involving lies and slanders against him and his family. He emphasized that his departure is a ‘conscious choice of dignity and responsibility’ and does not constitute an admission of guilt.

Opposition parties, including PASOK and SYRIZA, have reacted strongly to the revelations, demanding explanations from the Prime Minister regarding the administrative status of the role. Bekiris noted that he had previously suggested he provided his services ‘voluntarily’ and expressed his intention to resolve the matter through the courts.
