Michalis Chrysochoidis addresses crime, fraud, and prison policies

Greek Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis addressed several public safety and security issues in recent statements. Regarding the case of Albanian criminal Rizai, the Minister asserted that there is ‘no possibility’ that he will not be arrested.

Addressing prison policies, Chrysochoidis defended the practice of granting prison leave as a ‘humanitarian measure,’ noting that the escape rate following such leaves is approximately 1%. He clarified that there are no plans to abolish this system.

On the subject of crime, the Minister described telephone and online fraud as an ‘epidemic.’ He revealed that authorities recently discovered a complete telephone call center operating out of a residence in Zephyri. To combat this, the government plans to establish a National Combat Center in coordination with banks and other relevant agencies.

Regarding road safety in Attica, Chrysochoidis noted a significant increase in the presence of traffic police and mentioned that the government is reviewing certain aspects of road traffic fines. He also highlighted the impact of alcohol testing, noting that nearly 2 million tests have been conducted over the past eight months to save lives.
