Greece and US deepen strategic ties with $4 billion military agreement

During the 6th Greece-US Strategic Dialogue in Athens, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Greek officials, including Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, announced a significant deepening of bilateral ties. A major outcome of the visit is a $4 billion military cooperation agreement facilitated through Foreign Military Sales. This package includes the modernization of 37 F-16 aircraft to the Viper standard and the provision of Stryker armored vehicles to the Greek Army.

Beyond defense, the two nations reached several key agreements. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Greek Armed Forces and the Florida National Guard to enhance expertise exchange and interoperability. In the maritime sector, a new agreement was reached to recognize US maritime certificates of competence in Greece.

Energy security was a central theme, with discussions focusing on the Vertical Gas Corridor to facilitate the transport of US liquefied natural gas (LNG) through Greece to Central and Eastern Europe. Additionally, the leaders addressed regional stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, and the importance of the US-Greece partnership in maintaining security and prosperity.
