Michel Akotionga, Burkina Faso medical pioneer, dies

Professor Michel Akotionga, a prominent figure in Burkina Faso’s medical community, passed away on September 21, 2026. The Société des gynécologues et obstétriciens du Burkina (SOGOB) announced his death, honoring him as a former president and a foundational mentor in the field of gynecology and obstetrics.

Over a career spanning nearly 48 years since his graduation in 1978, Akotionga was a pioneer in the fight against female genital mutilation (FGM). He was specifically recognized for his work in reconstructive surgery for women affected by excision and his efforts to address obstetric fistulas.

In addition to his clinical work, Akotionga was a dedicated educator who trained many of the country’s current gynecologists and obstetricians. He also campaigned for improved emergency obstetric care to reduce maternal mortality rates.
