Michel Foucault centenary marks 100 years since birth of influential philosopher

The intellectual community is marking the centenary of the birth of Michel Foucault, the influential French philosopher born on October 15, 1926. Foucault, who died in 1984, remains a central figure in 20th-century thought due to his investigations into the relationship between power, knowledge, and social institutions.

His work, including ‘Discipline and Punish’, explored concepts such as the Panopticon—a prison model by Jeremy Bentham—to illustrate how constant potential observation leads to self-discipline and internalized control. In the modern era, scholars note that his theories on surveillance are increasingly relevant to the rise of digital data collection, algorithms, and ubiquitous camera networks.

Various commemorative events and publications are scheduled to coincide with the anniversary. These include academic conferences, new collections of his writings and archives, and scholarly reassessments of his critiques of humanism, sexuality, and the structures of madness and social norms.
