Michel Hazanavicius uses AI to reduce production time on WWI film
Vincent Maraval, CEO of the French sales-production company Goodfellas, reported that artificial intelligence significantly reduced production time for a major scene in the upcoming film ‘The Third Hand’. Directed by Oscar-winner Michel Hazanavicius, the film follows a young French soldier wounded in World War I who undergoes a procedure by a mad scientist.
Maraval noted that AI technology allowed a battle scene that would have required ten days of shooting to be completed in just two days. Addressing concerns regarding potential job losses due to such efficiency, Maraval stated, ‘It’s the director’s choice,’ and argued that new technology enables filmmakers to explore narratives that were previously impossible to produce.
In addition to creative benefits, Maraval suggested AI could enhance film profitability. He also noted a shift in industry financing, observing that films are increasingly relying on a combination of pre-sales and private equity investments.
