Michel Henrique reveals gambling addiction and criticizes betting sponsorships

Michel Henrique, a 37-year-old professional footballer and former top scorer of the Campeonato Gaúcho, has publicly disclosed his struggle with gambling addiction, known as ludopathy. The striker, who currently plays for Bagé, stated that his addiction to online casinos intensified between 2022 and 2023, describing how digital platforms are designed to trigger dopamine releases that lead to a loss of mental control.

Henrique criticized the heavy presence of betting companies as sponsors in major Brazilian football competitions, such as the Brasileirão and Copa do Brasil. He argued that the current business model generates profit for clubs and the media at the expense of individuals' suffering. He also noted the impact on youth in academy categories and mentioned the government's efforts to prevent social welfare beneficiaries from using funds on gambling platforms.

The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 1.2% of the global population was affected by gambling addiction in 2024. In response to rising concerns, legislative projects in Brazil are proposing bans on gambling advertising and sponsorships, following similar restrictions in countries like England, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. Additionally, some Brazilian states have moved to prohibit betting advertisements in public spaces and stadiums.
