Michel Martelly files presidential candidacy in Haiti

Former Haitian President Michel Joseph Martelly has officially filed his candidacy for the presidency through the Debloke coalition. Martelly, who served from 2011 to 2016, submitted his documentation to the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) in Port-au-Prince, accompanied by lawyers and supporters.

Martelly’s bid comes despite international sanctions. The U.S. Treasury’s OFAC sanctioned him in August 2024 for allegedly facilitating drug trafficking and money laundering. Additionally, the European Union imposed sanctions in December 2025 regarding alleged links to violence and human rights abuses.

Other notable presidential aspirants include former provisional president Jocelerme Privert, former Prime Minister Claude Joseph, and former Speaker of the House Gary Bodeau. The election process occurs amid a severe security crisis, with gang violence having caused over 5,700 deaths or injuries this year and displacing approximately 1.4 million people.
