Micheál Martin criticizes global failures at UN General Assembly

Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin addressed the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, delivering a critical assessment of the current global state. He stated that the international community has failed regarding the Palestinian issue, noting that despite ceasefire efforts, no significant changes have occurred in Gaza. Martin remarked that once all facts, evidence, and witness testimonies regarding the situation in Gaza are fully revealed, “the whole world will be ashamed.”

Martin also addressed the ongoing invasion of Ukraine by Russia, describing it as one of the bloodiest periods and a direct violation of the UN Charter by a permanent member of the Security Council. He highlighted the economic consequences of the war, such as rising grain prices. Additionally, he called for external actors to cease financing and arming the conflict in Sudan to prevent further escalation.

Regarding the international order, Martin warned that international law is under threat and that uncertainty is shaking the foundations of the global system. He emphasized that the response to global pressure should be increased cooperation rather than isolationism, reaffirming Ireland's commitment to the pillars of peace, security, and human rights.
