Micheál Martin defends Ireland manager after Israel FA rebuke
Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin has publicly defended Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson following a sharp rebuke from the Israel Football Association (Israel FA). The dispute arose after Hallgrimsson stated that the team would be “playing against genocide” during upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Israel.
The Israel FA responded on social media, accusing the coach of “stupidity, ignorance and hypocrisy.” In response, Martin described the Israel FA’s comments as “unacceptable” and called for them to be withdrawn, noting that the manager's remarks reflect broader international concerns regarding the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Amidst protests and calls for a boycott from over 160 Irish sportspeople, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has decided to proceed with the matches to avoid UEFA sanctions. Due to the controversy, both fixtures will be held at neutral venues in Hungary and Serbia, with Ireland’s home match scheduled to be played behind closed doors.
Former Minister Alan Shatter also commented on the situation, describing the social media intimidation directed at Irish players as “appalling.” Shatter criticized the “Stop the Game” campaign, characterizing the rhetoric used by protesters as “ideological political nonsense.”
