Micheál Martin outlines Budget 2027 priorities for Ireland

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has outlined key priorities for the upcoming Budget 2027, focusing on easing cost-of-living pressures for households. He confirmed that there will be no further increases to the carbon tax on home heating oil and kerosene, citing concerns over energy costs this winter. Additionally, Martin announced a “significant” childcare package, a Christmas bonus for social welfare recipients, and an increase in the rent tax credit.

Addressing the ongoing housing crisis, Martin defended the government's performance, stating that Ireland is currently the fastest place for house building in Europe. However, he conceded that property prices remain “too high.” This comes amid Department of Housing figures showing that the number of people in emergency accommodation reached a record 17,885 in August, including over 5,800 children.

Regarding public sector relations, the Taoiseach emphasized that negotiation is the only way forward to avoid extended disputes in public services, describing a forthcoming public pay agreement as “significant and substantial.”
