Michela Monari, former Italian volleyball star, dies at 53
Michela Monari, a former middle blocker for the Italian women’s national volleyball team, died at the age of 53. During her playing career she earned 79 caps for Italy, competed at the 1994 World Championship and the 1997 European Championship, and won a bronze medal at the 1992 Under‑19 European Championship. At club level she represented Bologna, Modena, Rubiera and Reggio Emilia, securing three Coppa delle Coppe titles with Anthesis Modena.
After retiring as a player Monari worked as a coach and technical director. Her daughter, Lisa Monari Gamba, follows in her footsteps and recently helped Italy win the Under‑18 European title, earning MVP honors. The Italian Volleyball Federation (FIPAV) issued a statement of condolence, signed by President Giuseppe Manfredi and other officials, praising Monari’s contribution to the sport.
