Michelangelus typeface inspired by Michelangelo joins Microsoft 365

The Fabbrica di San Pietro, the institution responsible for the maintenance of St. Peter's Basilica, has commissioned the creation of ‘Michelangelus’, a new typeface inspired by the handwriting of Michelangelo Buonarroti. Developed by the Italian creative agency studiogusto, the font is being integrated into the Microsoft 365 Office suite to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the consecration of the Basilica.

Rather than a literal reproduction of the artist's calligraphy, the typeface is a contemporary humanist serif designed for modern legibility. Designers studied original manuscripts, letters, and signatures held in Vatican archives to identify the visual logic, proportions, and rhythm of Michelangelo's penmanship. The font family includes over 500 glyphs across four styles: regular, italic, bold, and bold italic.

While the typeface is intended for use in digital and printed materials related to the Basilica's anniversary, it is being made available to the public through Microsoft. Local installation packages are already available for Windows and macOS, with cloud distribution through Microsoft 365 expected by the end of the year.
