Michelin developed the DS PLR prototype for tire testing
To address the need for high-speed tire testing for the emerging heavy-duty vehicle market, Michelin developed a specialized prototype known as the DS PLR (Poids Lourd Rapide).
In 1965, Michelin opened its Ladoux testing tracks near Clermont-Ferrand. Because standard trucks were too slow to effectively test new tire resistance and handling at high speeds, engineers spent three years developing a unique solution. The prototype utilized Citroën’s hydraulic suspension technology to maintain a constant attitude during testing.
The resulting vehicle was a 7.30-meter-long station wagon equipped with two Chevrolet V8 engines.
