Michelin implements RFID technology for tire lifecycle tracking

Michelin is implementing RFID technology to track the entire lifecycle of its tires. By embedding a chip and an antenna within the tire's vulcanized protective layers, the company can assign a unique identifier to every tire. This identifier includes a manufacturer prefix, product code, and serial number.

The system allows for data collection during manufacturing, inventory management, transport, servicing, and recycling. The RFID tags are passive, meaning they do not require a battery and instead draw energy from the radio waves emitted by a nearby reader.

Michelin has clarified that this technology is intended for product tracking and is not designed to monitor vehicle owners or provide real-time data such as tire pressure or temperature. Monitoring those specific parameters would require separate sensors utilizing protocols like Bluetooth.
