Michelin withdraws soft rear tire for Motegi Grand Prix race
Michelin has officially withdrawn the soft rear tire compound from the allocation for the main race at the Motegi Grand Prix. This decision follows significant tire degradation and blistering observed during the sprint race.
According to Michelin MotoGP Director Piero Taramasso, the issues were exacerbated by the high speeds of the sprint race—which was nine seconds faster than the 2025 event—and the use of new asphalt at the Motegi circuit. The combination of high track temperatures and the new surface led to extreme wear for several riders, most notably Jorge Martín and Pecco Bagnaia.
While the medium compound remains available, Michelin noted it will require careful management by the riders. The manufacturer is instead recommending the hard tire, which features a reinforced carcass, as the optimal choice for maintaining a consistent pace throughout the full race distance.
