Michelle Bachelet campaigns in Liberia and Somalia for UN chief seat

Former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet landed in Monrovia, Liberia, as part of a diplomatic push to win support for her candidacy to become the United Nations Secretary‑General. She met with President Joseph Boakai and acting foreign minister Ethel Davis, emphasizing the importance of securing votes from the 15 members of the UN Security Council, of which Liberia is a non‑permanent member.

Bachelet then travelled to Mogadishu, Somalia, where she held a meeting with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The encounter was described as positive, and the Somali president welcomed her campaign. The visit follows a broader African tour after stops in the Middle East and meetings with officials in Greece, Latvia, Colombia and Panama, all aimed at gathering backing ahead of the next round of UN Secretary‑General debates in New York.

The campaign seeks to replace António Guterres, with each Security Council vote considered crucial in the tightly contested race.
