Rebeca Grynspan leads third UN Security Council straw poll
The United Nations Security Council held its third informal straw poll to select a successor to António Guterres as Secretary-General. Rebeca Grynspan, the former Vice President of Costa Rica and current head of UNCTAD, led the results with nine 'encourage' votes, five 'discourage' votes, and one 'no opinion' vote.
Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Guyana’s permanent representative to the UN, followed closely with eight 'encourage' votes, six 'discourage' votes, and one 'no opinion' vote. Other candidates included Olara Otunnu of Uganda, Rafael Grossi of Argentina, and Macky Sall of Senegal, all of whom received five 'encourage' votes, though with varying levels of opposition.
Michelle Bachelet of Chile received significantly less support, with only one 'encourage' vote and 11 'discourage' votes. These straw polls are non-binding, closed-door procedures used to gauge candidate viability. To be formally recommended to the General Assembly, a candidate must secure at least nine votes and avoid a veto from any of the five permanent members of the Security Council.
