Michelle Bachelet visits Mexico to bolster UN Secretary-General bid

Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet is resuming her international diplomatic tour, including a visit to Mexico, to bolster her candidacy for United Nations Secretary-General. The move comes after a challenging second informal poll by the UN Security Council, where Bachelet placed seventh among eight candidates, receiving only two votes of support and six against.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has reaffirmed Mexico’s support for Bachelet, citing her commitment to peace, human rights, and multilateralism. Sheinbaum indicated she would meet with Bachelet to discuss the future of the campaign. Mexico and Brazil remain the primary international sponsors of her bid.

The candidacy faces significant political headwinds in Chile. Following a change in government, President José Antonio Kast’s administration withdrew official support for Bachelet, citing low chances of success. This withdrawal has drawn criticism from Chilean opposition members, who argue that the lack of domestic backing has weakened her position in the international race.
