Michelle Bachelet faces uncertainty in UN Secretary-General bid

Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet is facing significant uncertainty regarding her candidacy for the United Nations Secretary-General position. During a presentation of an ECLAC report in Mexico City, Bachelet expressed gratitude toward the Mexican people, recalling the country's support for Chileans following the 1973 coup.

Her campaign has encountered setbacks in the UN Security Council. In a recent informal straw poll, only two of the 15 Council members supported her name, while six rejected her and seven abstained. While Mexico and Brazil are sponsoring her candidacy, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum indicated that the real possibilities for success must be reviewed following a requested meeting with Bachelet.
