Michelle Bachelet signals openness to third Chilean presidential candidacy

Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has signaled her openness to a third presidential candidacy for the 2029 elections. During an interview with TVU, she responded to questions about a potential return to La Moneda by stating, “I think so,” though she has not formally announced a campaign.

Bachelet, who served two terms between 2006 and 2018, emphasized her commitment to working toward the unity of progressive political forces. She expressed concern regarding the potential rollback of rights, particularly for women, and stated she would do everything in her power to promote progress rather than regression.

Her comments follow her recent decision to withdraw her candidacy for UN Secretary-General, which she attributed to a “de facto veto” by permanent members of the Security Council. The political reaction in Chile has been varied. President José Antonio Kast acknowledged the legitimacy of different leaderships but suggested that any potential return should include an evaluation of the public policies from her previous administrations. Meanwhile, government officials noted that while her expression of interest is noted, it is not the administration's primary concern. Other political figures have criticized her potential return, with some calling it a representation of the past, while others, such as Evelyn Matthei, defended the right of women in politics to decide their own futures.
