Michelle Bachelet withdraws from UN Secretary-General race

Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has withdrawn her candidacy for the position of United Nations Secretary-General. The decision follows the third informal straw poll conducted by the UN Security Council, in which Bachelet received one 'encourage' vote, 11 'discourage' votes, and three 'no opinion' votes.

In the same voting round, Costa Rican Rebeca Grynspan emerged as the frontrunner with nine encouraging votes, followed closely by Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett with eight. Other candidates remaining in the race include Rafael Grossi, Macky Sall, Olara Otunnu, and Maria Fernanda Espinosa.

Bachelet, who had been nominated by Chile with support from Brazil and Mexico, noted that her candidacy aimed to promote the goal of having a woman from Latin America serve as the next UN leader. Her withdrawal has sparked political debate in Chile regarding the level of state support provided to her bid.
