Michelle Bolsonaro poised for Senate run in Brazil's Federal District

Ex‑first lady Michelle Bolsonaro is being urged by former president Jair Bolsonaro and Liberal Party (PL) leader Valdemar Costa Neto to run for a Senate seat representing Brazil’s Federal District. Jair has publicly encouraged her, noting the Senate’s strategic importance for the Bolsonaro bloc, while Valdemar told CNN Brazil, "I think she will be a candidate and will finish first in Brasília" and stressed that her support is vital for the party’s chances.

Michelle left the PL Mulher leadership after a public rift with her stepson, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, whom she accused of mistreatment. She has said her decision will depend on a “sign from God” and that she will await the party conventions in late July. Valdemar reiterated that the party cannot afford internal divisions, warning, "If we lose the election, Jair Bolsonaro could spend ten more years in prison. We cannot lose her work or anyone’s.”

The episode is part of a broader pattern of family disputes within the Bolsonaro clan, which has historically involved women—Rogéria, Ana Cristina Valle, and now Michelle—in political contests and investigations.
