Michelle Gielan promotes resilient optimism to combat burnout

Positive psychology researcher Michelle Gielan introduces the concept of ‘resilient optimism’ to combat negativity and burnout. In her new book, Resilient Optimism, Gielan provides scientifically backed methods to build positivity through small, manageable routines.

Research indicates that high levels of optimism are linked to significant professional benefits, including a 31 percent increase in productivity, a 56 percent increase in sales, and a 40 percent higher chance of promotion. Furthermore, optimistic individuals are five times less likely to experience burnout and show three times higher work engagement.

Gielan’s studies highlight the profound impact of negative information; exposure to just three minutes of bad news can negatively affect a person's mood for an entire day. To counter this, she suggests focusing on small, controllable steps in both personal and professional environments, particularly when facing overwhelming global issues like climate change.
