Michelle Landry announces retirement from Capricornia seat

Michelle Landry, the Member of Parliament for Capricornia in central Queensland, has announced she will retire at the next federal election in 2028. Landry has held the seat since 2013, serving five terms and previously playing a key role in the 2016 election that secured a slim majority for the Turnbull government.

Landry cited the enormous travel requirements of representing a 90,000-square-kilometre electorate and a desire to spend more time with her family as primary reasons for her departure. She denied rumors of being pressured to step down, noting that the decision was hers alone.

Her retirement has fueled speculation that Nationals leader Matt Canavan may move from the Senate to the House of Representatives to contest the Capricornia seat. Canavan, who resides in Yeppoon, faces a precarious position in the Senate due to rising polling for One Nation, which could threaten his seat on the Liberal National Party ticket.
