Michelle Obama discusses fashion scrutiny at Martha's Vineyard

Former First Lady Michelle Obama appeared at the Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center for two sold-out talks to promote her new book, ‘The Look’. During the event, held alongside journalist Michele Norris, Obama discussed the intense media scrutiny she faced regarding her physical appearance and clothing choices during her husband’s political campaigns and presidency.

Obama noted that the press often prioritized her attire and body over the substance of her speeches, stating, “If they want to go after a woman, they go after how she looks, how we feel about ourselves.” She explained that she viewed fashion as a strategic tool to communicate a message of inclusion and to represent the diverse tapestry of the American people.

During her appearance, Obama wore a striped ivory and racing green halter dress from the Carolina Herrera Pre-Fall 2026 collection.
