Michelle Obama pledges $1 million for global girls' education
Former First Lady Michelle Obama has announced a pledge of more than $1 million through the Girls Opportunity Alliance to support adolescent girls globally. In recognition of International Day of the Girl, the funding will be distributed among 25 organizations operating across 15 countries.
The investment aims to address barriers to education and personal development, such as poverty and discrimination. Specifically, the funds will support scholarships, mentorship, after-school programs, leadership development, and the creation of safe spaces. This initiative, established in 2018 through the Obama Foundation, builds upon Obama’s previous Let Girls Learn program launched in 2015.
This latest commitment follows a separate $500,000 investment in 10 Chicago-based organizations, bringing the total of these two recent announcements to $1.5 million.
