Michelle Zhou’s ‘Big Little Things’ premieres at Venice Film Festival
Michelle Zhou’s directorial debut, ‘Big Little Things’ (Huangyan shenghuo), has premiered in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival. The film is an intimate drama exploring female homosexuality in contemporary China and the consequences of deception.
The story follows Xiao Lei, who, after living in Beijing, faces pressure from her partner, Li Bei, to reveal their relationship to her family. To avoid conflict during the Lunar New Year, Xiao Lei asks an acquaintance, Yao, to pose as her boyfriend while visiting her hometown of Harbin. The narrative examines the tension between individual identity and traditional family expectations.
Critical reception highlights the film’s distinct visual style, described as a hyper-digital, polychromatic aesthetic that departs from the gritty social realism of previous Chinese film generations. While some critics praise the performances and the use of colloquial dialogue, others have noted issues with screenplay choices and directorial execution.
